What is the bar hidden under the plastic guard behind the bumper, and do people remove it? Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm pretty sure my Jeep is pretty much bone-stock

I've been looking at images of Wrangler bumpers online, to get ideas for my custom made one, and some of them appear to have the bar removed...

You may be talking about your sway bar. Look and see how it turns down and connects to your axle housing.

Don't remove this. You will need it for high speed road maneuvers. Many have disconnects for this while off roading but you might want to keep it for highway use.

There are aftermarket sway bars that mount inside the bumper. The Currie Antirock is one of them. Most of the pictures you see probably have some sort of aftermarket sway bar that don't bolt into the stock location
