Intense wobble at 40mph

I've been having a hard time figuring this one out. My 1997 2.5L on 33in tires has a pretty rough wobble at 40-45mph. If I try to speed through those speeds while holding down on the steering wheel it isn't as noticeable but you can still feel it. The steering doesn't have much play and besides bushings everything seems tight. Could low tire tread cause this? If I maintain the 40-45 and loosely hold on the steering wheel it gets worse

Tires certainly can cause this and I'd start with getting your tires balanced.

Rotate your front tires to the rear, see if the problem moves.

Sounds like DW but in my experiences, TJ, ZJ,XJ, if I didn't slow way down there was no recovering it by speeding up. Sounds like a bad tire or bad balance job. Apparently balancing has become a art most cannot comprehend, especially our local big box tire store.

Double check your alignment also

I've found that doing this with my Jeep during DW, stops it momentarily.
p.s. Have the tires balanced perfectly. Just good enough....isn't.

Thanks guys for the info. It's definitely not the DW. I need to get new tires soon anyways so I'll start with that and a balance

I had a similar situation and I had a sticking caliper. Was intermittent and usually started around 40mph and felt like it was going to go in the ditch. Put your hand on your front wheels after a drive and see if one of them is hot to the touch

I had a similar issue a few years back. Mine was the tires.
