Intermittent Fuel Delivery Issues With New Delphi FG1353 Pump

Hey everyone, looking for some help diagnosing an issue on my 1998 Wrangler TJ (4.0L, automatic). I recently replaced my fuel pump with a brand-new Delphi FG1353 module. The pump has less than 100 miles on it, hasn’t even made it through a full tank yet, and I’m already running into problems.

I originally replaced it because I thought my old pump wasn’t holding pressure (hard crank with no fuel). The new one seemed fine at first, but now I’m getting intermittent fuel pressure issues and some new symptoms as well.

What’s happening:
  • Occasionally after the Jeep sits (really it could be 5 minutes or overnight), it will not build fuel pressure on the first start attempt.
  • It just cranks with no fuel until I cycle the key again to prime the system.
  • After priming, it starts instantly.
  • This does not happen every time, only randomly.
  • While driving, the Jeep will sometimes feel like it’s not getting fuel at all.
  • Idle will suddenly drop extremely low and the engine struggles for about 15–20 seconds.
  • During this, the gas pedal does nothing — no response at all.
  • After that, it suddenly recovers and drives normally again.
  • It has never fully stalled, but it feels close.
Install note:

When I installed the Delphi FG1353, I struggled with getting the pump module and the rubber gasket/o-ring seated correctly. I eventually got it to look right and the locking ring went on, but it took some work and I wasn’t 100% confident during the process. The gasket looked properly seated when I finished — just mentioning this in case a slightly misaligned seal could cause intermittent pressure loss or the pump picking up air under certain conditions.

Before I drop the tank again or return the pump, I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced similar issues with the Delphi FG1353 on a TJ, or if a tricky gasket/seal could actually cause these symptoms even if it appeared correct.

I only replaced the module due to the hard crank/fuel pressure issue originally. Fuel pressure checks out every other time, and with this new pump as well. I have not been able to catch it when it doesnt have pressure/hard cranks though.

Sounds like you need to be monitoring or logging fuel pressure.

I put a gauge between the rail and hose with a Racetronix adapter. I've been meaning to replace it with a sensor and put a gauge in the cab.

For what it's worth that sounds like typical Delphi behavior and why I gambled on a $50 Rock Auto sourced Brute Power pump assembly. Been running just fine for two years.

That was my next step, or something similar… i do have a replacement from extreme terrain… might just throw that in there and say f it

I would like to do this also, what are your plans for in cab fuel pressure?thanks

Glowshift makes a pressure and temp gauge. Currently using one for my oil pressure and temperature.

I want to 3d scan this spot and 3d print a gauge pod. Room for two gauges and a couple switches. Then I could add a fuel pressure and temp gauge.

What don't like about the Glowshift is the pressure and temp probes are seperate 1/8" sensors...not a single...this was a PIA for oil and I still haven't gotten that to stop seeping oil.

I also wish it would log or could be incorporated into the PCM. Ultimately to that end I'd like to replace my PCM with a Haltech.

oh,i was going stepper motor from auto meter.your not having fuel into the cab?I was going to move my locker gauge somewhere else and do fuel pressure above the trans temp.

I had an issue with occasional non-start with my delphi fuel pump after fitting it several years ago.

I still had the OEM pump in a scrap pile and found the pins in the connector of the Delphi unit were ever so slightly thinner than the OEM pins.

I disassembled the loom side connector to get to the female terminals and pushed the sprung contact of the terminal inwards. When pushing the connector together after that I could feel the difference the tighter contacts made. I've had no issues with it since then.

Thats what I've read too. It seems like an electrical issue. I threw on the new pump from Extreme Terrain 2 days ago and had the same issue shortly after but have yet to have it again. I still have the original and was thinking of just taking the pigtail off that and attaching it to the new one.
