I have the opportunity to purchase a 1991 Cherokee Laredo at a great price in excellent condition (70k miles). Other than my current TJ, I don't have any experience with older Jeeps. (is a 91 an "XJ"?)

Are there any known issues that I should be aware of? (Obviously I'll look for frame rust) but since the engine is a the 4.0l, I'm assuming the engine would be as reliable as the TJ (?).

Thanks for any advice or insight anyone has!

Yes, that's an XJ (84-01). Since that's right in the middle I'd bet it's a great option and should be pretty reliable. Of course at that age plan to service all the fluids, hoses, etc.

Definitely check on rust as @rasband said. At that age with so few miles, unless the owner has records or you trust their word, budget for a cooling system overhaul as well as your time & cost to replace all other fluids.

Any pics? What would you be using it for?

Unfortunately it sold quick! But I'm going to stay in the market for an XJ as I've always loved the way they look and the more utilitarian feel of them. Maybe look at a 96-99. It would be a semi-daily driver and to move boxes and materials for my company — maybe even some light overlanding and camping. Not looking to modify it beyond a small lift and slightly larger tires. I'll just have to do a bit of research to find out what to avoid (like the 0331 head for the 00-01 TJ's — I already have one of those!)

@nctj - As for "96-99" XJs, 1996 is the last of the early body style and they have some transitional features that came in with the 1997 model. They aren't considered one of the better years. You mentioned a 1991 Laredo in your first post. Laredos are second only to Limteds in terms of trim level but many like them better, me included. 1991s are the first of the post RENIX era and have the 4.0 litre HO, for high output, engines. They really aren't any more powerful though.

If you Google "Jeep Cherokee XJ rust" images you'll see all of the hot spots ... and there are plenty of them. Most of it is repairable but some simply aren't worth it. There are plenty of good ones out there though. Happy hunting!
