1998 jeep wrangler tj with 4.0. Engine turns over well but is hard to start. Replaced fuel pump, plugs, wires, rotor and dist. caps and coil. Runs good when it starts but has to turn over a while before it starts.
Get in the car and turn the ignition on (but don't turn the car over).
Let the fuel pump prime, which usually takes about 5 seconds (if it's quiet, you should hear it priming)
Turn the ignition off
Repeat this process 3-4 times, each time making sure the fuel pump fully primes
Now start the vehicle
Does it start right up? If so, it's your drainback valve which is part of the fuel pump assembly. You'll need to replace the fuel pump to fix this. Bosch (if you can find one) is the best replacement brand, followed by Delphi.
There's a possibility if you installed some low quality local auto part store fuel pump, that your issue is a faulty fuel pump (wouldn't be the first time I've heard of it happening).
+1 on timely thread - I've been doing steps 1, 2, and then 5 based on Chris' post (for over a year at least). Don't need steps 3 and 4, but otherwise sounds like the fuel pump issue...
p.s. it's a 2.5 4-cyl, not sure if important or makes a diff
