Took my rig out for its maiden (for me) middle east desert voyage. It came with new wide 33" mud tires. Bet they were on sale. Learned immediately that those are the absolute worst tread pattern in the desert unless it rains (which it doesn't). A few minutes into it I started digging to America. Stopped, let lots of air out and got the heck out of Dodge. I did not get stuck, but easily could have. Learned, road style summer tread is best and speed is your friend. Real desert sand is closer to moon dust. Other than that, the old TJ behaved nicely. I have new respect for the Emirati's who go desert hill climbing. It looks easy on Youtube. A heck of a lot different when viewed through the windshield. Going to get the tires changed immediately, a little more paint work and the rig should be near complete. BTW, locals love the XJs for the desert.

Sounds like quite the adventure. I live in the desert. However, our sand isn’t like “that” sand. Not quite as deep or loose. I did get just the rear tires in the sand on the side of a trail, there was no traction at all. With the rear locker on, they just spun. Had to put it into 4 wheel to get the extra traction from the front to get out. The trail didn’t require 4 wheel until that point. It made me respect the sand more. I use all terrain K02’s here, which have been great for everything.....until.

The locals frequently use a lightly grooved balloon tire that is almost a slick. I looks like the tire on a wheel barrow. Knobby treads immediately start digging down rather than moving you forward. 15 seconds into it the pucker factor needle went into the red.
