I like those!but does it stick the spare back way far with the tanks behind it?Believe it or not but the smittybilt ,with Hooke road has done good for my waverly tank.

I have for mine a LITE WEIGHT cheap cargo carrier that plugs into hitch. I have 2 cans in it. Plus some more room for my portable generator.
Not to heavy and easily installs for when needed.

I think the OR Fab was in the $600-800 range? I did that back around 2008. The metalcloak one addresses the way OR Fab rests on the tailgate which is the only thing I don't like about it. It wears where the foot contacts the tailgate a bit.

I'll be sleeping in the trailer, so I'd rather not put gas inside, and I don't care much about looks--plus the can will only be mounted when I'm headed 100miles from the nearest gas station. I'll be fine with any opprobrium I receive.

Gotcha, wasn't sure if it was just a camp junk trailer your pulling. Those side mounts just dont sit well with me for whatever reason, but its not me jeep either. I've never used those hi tech plastic fuel holders, but I will say when your bouncing around and its hot, the fuel will expand and leak out of the GI cans which is all I ever use. So think fumes and fire potential where ever you mount them.
I had one of the Dirtworx spare/can carriers on a YJ, but I dont see them on his website anymore. maybe you can give him a call and ask if their still being built. None the less it came at a cost. But they are a item you'll not regret having in the future and it keeps the tail gate from destroying itself.

Yeah, my brain is kind of filtering things into short and long term options. I still think the side mounts are the best short term option (cost, easy to install, no fab necessary). Long term options, I don't know what is best yet. Fabbing a side mount for the trailer seems best, but I worry about the weight carrying capacity of the side of a camping trailer. If the long term price starts pushing $2k then the replacement tank is the obvious solution, but if the price gets up that high, I may not even want a long term solution.

I ran one of those for years, one of the early mods on my rig. I used that T-handle on my current custom setup, so it's still part of my rig after 22 years.
