I bought a used Powertank from a buddy a while back and wanted to mount it in my TJ. I really didn’t care for any of the other mounts I found out there and certainly didn’t want to drop $150 for Powertank’s floor mount (they’re awfully proud of their stuff!) Besides, a vertical floor mount has a smaller footprint.

Anyway, I wanted a really secure mount because, God forbid, in an accident you definitely don’t want that cylinder bouncing around your Jeep! I did some homework, did some measuring, and for just under $40 I found a killer setup with a Kidde 20lbs fire extinguisher mount. This thing is solid steel, built like a brick s-house, and I bolted it through the floor with 5/16ths hardware, using big fender washers underneath. It’s very solidly mounted now and I can easily get to it, while retaining the ability to recline both seats. I took out the rear bench seat a while ago and installed a Tuffy box for all my tools and spares (same deal, don’t want those thing flying around in case of an accident), so here are a few pics of the Kidde mount just in front of the Tuffy box:

Sure, no problem. The second picture in my original post shows the four 5/16 25mm bolts going in from the top. You’ll have to remove the bracket at the bottom of the Kidde mount so you can drill the rear bolt holes, but it only takes a minute to unscrew the two bolts that hold it in place. I would suggest using the Kidde mount floor piece as your template, drill one hole at a time and push a bolt through so you stay lined up.

If you want to mount it in the same spot I did, right behind the center console, line up the rear bolt holes with the rear seat bracket bolt (see pic below with red arrow). You will then see from below that you’ll have room for two big fender washers per bolt. Home Depot didn’t have locknuts in stock so I just put two nuts on each bolt and snugged them up against each other, to prevent them from loosening up. The pics might look like the rear brake cables are in the way but it’s pretty easy to get behind them with a ratchet. You will need a second set of hands inside the Jeep to keep the bolts from spinning while you’re tightening from the bottom.
