2005 LJ 6spd 155k miles
Im on my 3rd set of axle shaft seals for my rear dana 44 in recent months. I need some help trying fix it from leaking. Sorry for the long message but im running out of ideas.
Some history on the vehicle. I replaced the stock shafts approx 2 years ago with ecgs aftermarket axle shafts. A few months ago i had it professionally regeared to 4.56 and a elocker installed. At that time the shop said both my shafts seals were leaking and had them replace the seals. When i went back for the 500 mile gear check, the shop said they were leaking again. They said the shafts were most likely flawed. I contacted ecgs and they mentioned 2 years ago there was a flawed seal design that has since been fixed. I shipped ECGS my shafts and they inspected and returned them with new seals and bearings for free. ECGS has the BEST customer service i have dealt with. I reinstalled the axle shafts and the driver side leaked after the 1st drive.
Ive checked:
Vent tube - before and after the latest seals were installed
Emery cloth the tube surface. No obvious wear signs
Used permatex ultra black oil resistant rtv on the outer seal surface
Greased the seal surface prior to install. High temp bearing grease
Oil level. Stock cover. Oil was slightly below the plug
Currently only the driver side leaks which was the worse leaking seal prior to the new seals
Whats next? Any suggestions are much appreciated
