LED Question

Was reading the cheap/free mod thread and saw these LED bulbs for reverse lights:

I ordered a set and I have been considering changing other lights to LED, but I see some that are 'plug and play' and some that require other components or leave the turn signals partially illuminated, etc.

My question is if certain lights are 'plug and play' what is the advantage to those that require additional components?

Great question...I have the plug n play reverse light and brake lights too...they literally click into place bayonet style.
My reverse light is super bright now and makes things so much easier to see behind me.
Haven't done my turn signals though.

All the lights are plug and play (you would need a new relay for the blinkers to prevent hyperflash)

The advantage is that you don’t require additional components or electrical work...

Years ago when LEDs first became a thing you would have to buy adapters or retrofit a lot, but not anymore. The only issue you might run into is if you replace your side marker lights with LEDs. They are dual grounded and would require to electrical work to make them work properly.

Ive replaced all my interior lights, all my dash and center console lights, and all my brake/reverse lights. The only extra component I needed was a relay that you replace in the steering column ($15ish) to fix the turn signal hyperflash.

I suggest going to “superbrightled.com” and select your vehicle. It lists every LED bulb needed to retrofit your vehicle

I was looking for the Novita EP26 at a local parts dealer. Both O'Reilly's and Advance Auto near me said the EP26 WAS NOT compatible with '04 Wrangler TJ. They both said the

• Part Number: LM470 was the proper flasher. I have not removed my old flasher yet, so I don't know what's going on. I do know the EP26 is a 4 blade flasher and the LM470 is a five blade flasher.

I removed one lamp from the driver side tail light, and the blinker went into hyper-drive. I have located high quality LED lamps at M4 Products. The gentleman that runs the place said the new flasher MAY solve the problem, but if it doesn't, he has in-line resistors that will make everything LED behave.

My Jeep is a "toad" that follows my RV. Consequently, I have an extra lamp inside each tail light fixture. The extra 1157 lamps are wired like trailer lights that hook up to the RV trailer socket. This way the tail lights, brake lights and turn signals work off the RV system.

Roger that, thanks. I will take the old one out and see if it is four or five blade. That should settle the matter, at least to me.

On the subject of flashers......we install a heavy duty flasher because the load has been reduced. What would happen if you put a heavy duty flasher in without reducing the load? What would happen if the factory flasher went out and it was replaced with a heavy duty flasher without changing anything else? Just curious.

Thats a good question, I’ve never tried it. But Id assume it’d make the blinking super slow

O-Tay! I installed an Novita LM470 LED flasher in Nellie Belle. The LM470 is a 5 blade flasher, while the EP26 is a 4 blade flasher.

Taking the old flasher out was not nearly as traumatic as I had envisioned.

By the way, after installing the new flasher, I took a lamp out of the tail light to see if the flasher would make it flash either faster or slower. No change that I could see. Neither of my side marker lights worked, so I bought some LED 168 lamps in voila! they both came on. And they flashed at the correct speed.

FYI: the Sylvania LED 168 lamps are clearly marked "off road use only", while the Sylvania Osram 168 lamps were not. I cannot imagine why....except the LED lamps are pretty bright. I don't know how much brighter because neither was working so I had nothing with which to draw an analogy.

I am now comfortable with ordering lamps for all the tail lights and turn signals. I will be getting them from M4 Products. They are a little pricey, but hopefully they are of enough better quality to warrant the additional expense. M4 is the "go to" place for LED replacement lamps for RV's, so that's how I know about them. The owner there is a very nice gentleman who takes the time to answer all the questions one may have.
