Lifter noise

hello you guys i know there is alot of threads bout this but i wanted to make my own just to see what type of information i can get

so i get this ticking lifter sound /noise that everyone talks about im currently at 118k on my jeep 4.0 and once the engine is at full warm temps the noise goes away and sounds nice and healthy .


is there Ny type of cure to this or should i worry that something is going to go bad on it or whats the fix i kept reading about just changing oils to a different brand or thicker oil

the oil that it currently has is what the dealer puts on at the actual jeep dealer so i think they put semi synthetic i think the guy menioned im not too sure but thats what the engine currentyl has it has a mopar oil filter too the oil was replaced maybe 500k miles ago.

any inputs or word of advice for this or should i just leave it alone or?

Determine if it is indeed a lifter tick and not an exhaust leak. The 4.0 is notorious for cracking exhaust manifolds, and if it goes away once it warms up, it could be that. I have a lifter tick that comes and goes whether it is warm or cold.

I hope you mean 500 miles ago. In this heat you could easily run 15w-40, It's cheap and might help. If the noise very suddenly goes away, especially when you rev the engine it is almost certainly a lifter. Exhaust will fade away over a minute or two. I wouldn't worry too much either way, just don't hammer on it when it is making noise. Like you've probably read, just switch types or brands of oil and see what works. Mine does it when I don't change the oil often enough, just after 3500 miles normally.

is it the same sound if is a manifold crack?

and yeah lol my bad i meant 500 miles lol

yeah i mean when the engine isnt at full warm temps i dont hammer it
i only hammer it when the engine is at full operating temps and i notice that the ticking goes away once is nice and warm
maybe my next oil change ima go slightly thicker ??

should i do full synthetic my next oi change or what do you recommend what brand and what weight

15w-40, it's called oil for diesel engines or something like that. It's not full synthetic.

I have the audible noise when cold as well, I poured some marvel mystery oil stuff in and that helped temporarily. I also have Shell Rotella 15w40 and it didn't help much. Im going to my next step which will be Amsoil engine flush and fresh oil and see what happens with that.

Mechanic in a can engine flushes plus lifter additives often work and often do not. Roll of the dice really. In most cases the tick is more of an annoyance than a problem. The true fix is simple enough, but it opens Pandora's box. The fix is a new cam shaft and lifters. If you do that, you might as well refresh the head and replace the timing gear anc chain. If you are in it that deep, all you have left is the botom end and pistons. I am afflicted with TJOCD and lack the restrainst to only do the needful. It gets worse, a rebuild could cost more than buying a remanufactured engine. Try the additives and perhaps a different oil and live with it as long as you can.

Yup this is where Im at. If this flush doesn't work, Ill be dropping an engine in it. Unless I decide to sell it...

If the Jeep is in good shape, whether you do nothing, lifters or an engine, no big deal. A new engine is the equivelent of two car payments to the bank.

how did the amsoil engine flush go? My 05 LGR has a tick at 173,000 and curious to try it out
