Lifter tick or cracked manifold?

did replacing the manifold improve gas mileage?

I have a 2000 4.0 with the 32rh. I have the same ticking on start-up then goes away. It hasn't been high on my priority list. I typically get 14 mpg.
My average is right about there usually as well. I think the manuals have the capability for a little better mpg since we don't have overdrive. On a side note, I love that transmission it has helped me get through trails some small lifted jeeps were struggling through because of its ratios. If a couple mpg is the price I’ll take it.
