For anyone towing a TJ, I tow mine behind my RV. I have been using a set of magnetic lights I put on the rear bumper of the jeep, pain in the ass but they work. There are some kits that let you tap into the vehicle being towed electrical system using diodes but I didn’t want to get into the jeeps electrical system. There is a Roadmaster kit that uses separate 1157 bases that you snap into the tail light assembly but you have to drill a 1 inch hole through the back of the light and through the body panel. They cost in the $60.00 range. They also sell just the housings, no wire for $22.00. I already have the wire running to the rear for my magnetic lights and I didn’t want to drill a 1 inch hole in the jeep so I bought two 3157 bases for $9.00 and a trailer end 4 flat to plug into my existing 4 flat car end thats in the back corner where I plugged my magnetic light in. If I didn't already have this wire installed I would have just run a wire to the lights and not needed the trailer plug. I epoxied the base to the inside of the light housing, drilled a small hole for 2 wires to exit right next to where the stock wire exits and used the wide hole already in the body so no new holes. I left the third ground wire in the housing and grounded it to the housing bolt. The 3157 base I used has 3 wires, red is ground, green is miner and black is major. You hook the brown (running lights) to the green minor and the green (right turn) or yellow ( left turn) depending on which side your wiring to the black major wire. I ran my original wires from the front of the jeep through the fire wall and through the wire run at the bottom of drivers door and back to rear corner and thats where my existing plug is. In the driver side rear corner there is a grommet to run the wire down and out to back of light housing. I then ran the passenger side wiring following the stock harness behind gas tank and then up to right light housing. Now all I do is plug the jeep in and done. Hope this helps somebody that is looking for an easy setup for towing lights.
