Just wanted to take a sec to introduce myself. Names Michael and I'm a Jeep Wrangler'oholic. I've had a JK for many years but decided to dive into the wonderful world of the TJ/LJ.

I hope to share some stories, tips, and knowledge and read more from my fellow jeepers.

Cheers!

Nothing like taking a few inches off the waistline! When I look at the newest 4-door JK's decked out in all the trim and oversized everything from the factory, I think the only thing missing is the "H3" on the rear door.

Very true. I like the style and look of the JK, but the TJ/LJ just seems more traditional to me. The longer wheelbase of the JK unlimited does provide an advantage over the short wheelbase the TJ offers.

I've been looking to buy a LJ for about a month now. I've come across a bunch but their all automatic sport versions. Who buys a automatic jeep lol. I'm sure they appeal to some but not this guy.

Welcome! Have you bought a TJ/LJ yet?
Not yet, I've been on the hunt for a 2005-2006 LJ Rubi Manuel trans. Everything I find is either a huge rust bucket beat all to hell and back or it's a automatic transmission.

Distance for me isn't a factor. I live on the east coast but I'll make a drive or fly somewhere when I find the right LJ for me.

It took me a long time to find my LJ Rubicon (a rust free one). Anytime they would pop up, they were always rust buckets like you mentioned. Mine is an automatic, but I prefer the auto as it's very well suited to off road terrain (especially when in a tight situation).

Keep looking. You'll probably have to travel, but eventually one will pop up.

Thanks. I won't stop looking. Lol. Do you know of any good sites to narrow down my search? I've tried the norm like autotrader, cars, etc. I even found a site that just post jeeps but doesn't seem to be very active these days.

Honestly, your best bet is Craigslist, eBay, and autotrader. Using all of those, something will eventually pop up. The LJ Rubicon is rare (especially in good condition), so a lot of it will be a waiting game.

Find that LJ yet? Another thing you should do is use http://www.searchtempest.com/ It's a Craigslist agregator so you can search nationwide if you want without having to do separate searches for each city. It was super handy! When I was looking, I checked multiple times per day and found a listing for my LJ Rubi two hours after it was posted, which gave me the first come / first serve advantage with the seller once the other calls came in.

I and many other more experienced Jeepers will recommend any model year Rubicon or TJ except 2005-2006. 4.0L engines from those two model years have an oil-pump drive assembly problem that is not always easily fixed, or fixed for long. If you want an LJ Rubicon, I'd stick with a 2003 or 2004 which are far more trouble-free. My 2004 has been fine.

Also, the 6-speed is a lighter-duty transmission that gives more problems than the previous NV3500. The 6-speed was only available in the 2005-6 models so you'll either have to settle for the better/stronger 5-speed or go with the automatic which is a better transmission choice for more technically challenging course. Not because you don't have to shift, because the automatic gives an infinitely low 1st gear ratio and it multiplies torque (yes) 2-3X over that of a manual transmission (yes too) when you're accelerating up & over an obstacle or leaving from a stop.

The nice thing about going from a JK to a TJ is that TJs are a LOT easier to work on and modify. Good decision to go that way! :)

Man if there was a 2003 Rubi LJ I sure missed out:rolleyes:. In fact, I think there were dang few available in 04.

Fixing the OPDA problem is really pretty easy. Swap in a 6.0:firedevil:

Well. Shit. :( I bought my 2006 LJ Rubi automatic a month ago. Somehow I missed this info until now.

What should I do about it if selling isn't an option? Anything to be done before the problem hits? Anything I should be listening for or looking for to fix it before something catastrophic happens?

I wouldn't see the end is near just yet. Check out this post. Tons of info on the interwebs if you search for opda + tj. I'm still debating on an extremely clean '06 LJ (maybe giving my son my '08 JK since the deer got the better of his KJ. Well, the deer didn't fare so well either, but that's another story...) and this is a concern of mine as well.

Hey, xenocryst, just noticed your locale. My oldest is stationed there... has an '03 TJ. :)

Is he part of the Just Jeeps of Omaha club? We just made a trip to the Tuttle Creek ORV park in Kansas for some wheeling and camping. It was a blast! Tell him to look for the club on Facebook if he's not already a member. We do other activities as a group too, like pulling tractors to their starting area for tractor pulls and donating Christmas gifts to local kids in foster care.

Sounds good, I'll let him know. He is a Off-road neophyte... Surprised the heck out of me when he bought the TJ
