The only reason I don't care for the nutserts is having to buy the tool to install them.

a nut and bolt and be fine

add some washers to that mix and you have your installation "tool"

When I needed some 1/4 X 20 nutserts, Ace Hardware had the kit: a 5/16 coupler nut, a 1/4 X 20 X 2" Cap screw, and an Allen Wrench to fit it.

I have that same nutsert tool, except that I already had the coupler nut and cap screw in my collection of old fasteners and the allen wrench came from my collection of allen wrenches supplied with "assemble yourself" furniture and other items. Nothing to buy.
