I’m on the market for a rocker panel guard/step combo for my 2004 TJ and would love to read what you have and a pic if possible. Thanks!!!

I'm actually looking for at rocker guards with the step tube fabricated parallel with the guard and yes there are many options. I don't care for the nutsert fastener type. I am curious as to which are of good quality, look nice, and most importantly are not overpriced. I know ultimately it is plate steel with a tube welded onto it but your opinions and experiences matter to me.

I have a set like this. They're not the preferred type, being mounted to the body mounts. But they're as inexpensive as you'll find. The problem with them, is that the step is only a few inches below the door, so doesn't help much.

Would it be possible to affix a rocker guard secured with the body mounts and, also, a step secured to the same body mounts? Seems possible to me but I'm not sure.

Body mounted is a bad choice. The strongest and best way is through mounted on the inside of the tub, then nutserts where there is a blind hole. What holds the weight of your transmission and skid plate?

The Genright’s do look great but I was hoping for a less expensive facsimile thereof. I might have to bite the bullet in the end get a Gen.

I thought 'body mounted' means mounted to the tub. Since the tub is the body. Not to be confused with attached to the body mount.

That is my point. Mounted to the body mounts is not the same as body mounted.
Also I think most will use nutserts in the body to hold it. You could just use a nut and washer on the inside of the tub if you don't like nutserts. But I think you mean you don't want any fastener through the tub to attach the gaurd.
I am not trying to be a dick. (Though it may seem like it) I am just trying to help you to determine what features and designs you are after so as to make a better recommendation. Have you thought about something like a Rubicon guard and then weld the type and shape of step you want? It could be the best way to get just what you are looking for.

I got these: Rampage Bars with Drop Step

They mount to where the frame is connected to the tub.

Not particularly attractive, and not up to the needs of serious rock crawlers, I'm sure, but reasonably priced and do the job I need them to do. (We're old and need the step assist. ;))

The only reason I don't care for the nutserts is having to buy the tool to install them. I don't mind drilling the holes in the tube for fasteners but, for myself, a nut and bolt and be fine. Thanks!

I get what you are saying, but Amazon has several tools of various quality and price. But they aren't really expensive. And once you get one you will wonder how you lived this long without it. O.k., that may be a bit dramatic, but the ability to use nutserts can be a real advantage when that nut is a p.i.t.a. to get to and you need to get to it more than once.
