Hello Jeepers, question here. I bought some Duralast gold lower ball joints GFA 1633 for my 2003 Jeep TJ. I installed one side so far but when I tightened the nut to the specs the guy told me 85 ft lbs it crushes the grease boot to where you almost can’t see it. Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem is? before I do the other side.

Couple things jump out

The castle nut is way higher than it should be. See how the installer just bent the ends of the cotter pin down? You shouldn't be able to do that

The boot looks way more compressed than it should be

Either the taper on the bj is wrong or the knuckle is wallered out. Did it have serrated bjs installed previously?

I agree the castle nut should not be tightened that far down. Something with either the hole or ball joint isn't right.

I'd say you messed up by buying Duralast ball joints. Wait to see how long those last, especially if you wheel.
