I’m not sure if you watched the hobbit movies. They draw a lot of criticism (personally, I enjoyed them) but MAN if they got one thing right, it was Smaug.

Yea, I saw them. They were well done, but were not "canon", which was a REAL distraction. LotR followed the book far better, although I still shake my head about Faramir dragging Frodo and Sam all the hell way back to Osgilliath.
