My toy bought a few weeks back. 1997. The title says it's an SE but the specs scream Sport. 2.5, AX5, 5 speed manual, little to no frame rust. No death wobble. Lift appears have been done by Fortec Jeep Specialists in Roswell GA several years back. 101k on the odometer. 7400 bucks. Interior is good with only the driver's seat needing an upholstery job. I had to buy a new soft top for it as the previous one was toast. Found what was supposed to be the last dark tan one in the country (since Bestop considers it obsolete) at a shop in southern Indiana and the guys at 4 Wheel Parts here in Duluth had it shipped to us. Top was probably never addressed before since the last owner garaged it. Got a few little issues. Throwing occasional P0171 codes when it's doing a lot of starting and stopping and especially on the hotter days, so I'm starting at the vacuum hoses and working my way down (as I had to in my old late 90s model Cherokees). Also the occasional P0302 so I may start with that cylinder 2 injector there. Smelling a little coolant after stops but not finding any below her. Suspecting that the plastic bottle or the radiator may be going south (also just like it did in my older late 90s Cherokees). Doesn't get over 210 though so not a huge issue yet. Harder starts when it's been shut off, so the check valve in the fuel regulator is suspect. It's had a new crank sensor, O2 sensor and fuel pump in the last year. Slipping new plugs, wires, DC, and rotor in her this weekend and maybe a change of synthetic MT90 for the tranny and some regular 90 weight for the diffs too. I'm thinking that while she needs just a little TLC, the deal wasn't too bad.

Just checking to see if you resolved the P0302 issue? I've got the same thing going on with my 2001 4.0l. Mine acting like its a vapor lock after you turn it off for a few minutes it occasionally will throw the P0302. I tested coil rail, put new plugs XP 985 Autolites in, replaced injectors after doing fuel rail pressure test and noticed a fuel leak by pressure dropping rapidly, did cylinder pressure test and got 125, 115, 115, 110, 110, 115, and did the heat kit for vapor lock. Still got P0302....I did notice injector #2 pigtail clip/lock is missing so ordered all 6 new pigtails - which are on the way. Any other ideas?

I also checked the wiring harness , especially in back of engine where it rounds the corner- no chaffing/wire breaks. I did find the ground strap wasn't tight on engine block side back by the firewall and tightened that. I disconnected the battery and using electrical diagram ohm tested all of the green wires going to each fuel injector back to the 20amp fuse and all tested well (positive one). Then I tested each negative wire on each injector back to the second plug on the ecm, again using the electrical diagram to ensure that each had a good connection as well as ensuring there were no cross connected wiring issues between each injector and all other ones (negative side). Other than the broken clip/lock on injector #2 pigtail, I'm not seeing anything wrong in this area. Unless there is something else to check here?

Solved my own post as cylinder pressure tests were low, and wet tests they jumped up at least 20-30 psi per cylinder. Low compression in cylinders 2-5 was my issue. Found low mileage 4.0l engine and swapped it out. All issues solved. I went ahead and replaced all 6 fuel injector pigtails by soldering in new ones just in case. When putting back together wiring harness I took my time a made it look factory new. Peace of mind and shouldn't need to touch again. 49k new to me engine has a lot more power and couldn't be happier with no more check engine light. And now have tuppy cylinder head to boot!
