Military Memes

Senior drill had a poster in his office -

"There are only two MOS's in the Army: Infantry and Support."

I was heading into ADA, so it made me sad. I understood, but still bummed.

Especially when I was in a LID, walking through the woods with a 5' missile draped over my ruck, catching on everything, still responding to indirect fire drills... I hated that thing.

Hawkeye: War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.
Father Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye?
Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?
Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe.

Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them — little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

They were still giving C Rations out when I joined. IMO most were better than MREs.

Turkey Loaf was my favorite. In the early MRB, (Meals, Ready to Barf), it was a tie which one was worse, the Beef Brick, or the Pork Brick. If you're old enough to remember them, you know what I mean. If you're not, no explanation could do it justice.

Best part about dehydrated pork patties - ETS.

I was @ NTC for 45 days and my unit was testing out the then NEW MRE's. We got one hot per day and MRE for the other two. I lost 15lbs and at the time I was skinny already. So YES I do remember them.

I joined in 84 - C rats were gone, but some of the older supply sgts had stashes I got to sample. Far better than the first iteration of MREs.

I joined in 78 and it wasn't until 83 I think when they started to test the MRE on troops.

We got rations in 1971 that were packed in 1952. Spam, saltines, 4 Winstons, 4 matches, 5 sticks of Wrigleys gum, and sometimes a small can of fruit. We also had coffee from ancient times packed in foil pouches. It was powerful enough to melt paint right off of a steel deck.

The P-38 Multi Tool Use and History
This 1.5-inch tool was designed to open C-Rations during WWII. The “P” may stand for puncture and “38” for the number of cuts it took to go around the can. The hole in the P-38 was used to dip it in boiling water to sterilize after use. Many consider it the most perfect tool ever designed for combat. It is often called “the Army’s Best Invention.”
