I work in healthcare now. This was me laughing at everyone complaining about masks at work in the hospitals during CoVid. I mean we were inside AC 67 degrees....

Children - I joined the Navy in 1969. My first ship, the USS Ely, was built in 1943. That's old.

Yep I went to basic in June 78. But I was only 17 when I joined too. My son was born in Feb 85 so I wasn't a dad yet... I was working on becoming one.
69 was one year before I moved to Ak and I was 8.

In ‘69 my dad was in Thailand and I wasn’t even a twinkle in his eye
. But he made it , I’m here and my son is planning his re-enlistment. 6yrs down signing for 6 more. I’ll be headed back to Virginia real soon to watch. 
As a Navy dad and Veterans son who never served, thank you all for volunteering to defend my freedom.
It's actually because traditional, sodium based soap doesn't work in saltwater...the extended bend over time is just a side benefit!
It's also actually liquid now, and almost never used because the reverse osmosis plants make so much fresh water, they have to pump it overboard sometimes. Plus, no more boilers to feed.
I'm guessing the only other dude on the forums salty enough to have actually taken a saltwater shower or actually had the word passed that,
"The ship is approaching a rain squall. All hands topside for freshwater washdown, topside showering is authorized", Is @ Dr. Internet.
Those were the good ole daze.
