It's actually because traditional, sodium based soap doesn't work in saltwater...the extended bend over time is just a side benefit!
It's also actually liquid now, and almost never used because the reverse osmosis plants make so much fresh water, they have to pump it overboard sometimes. Plus, no more boilers to feed.
I'm guessing the only other dude on the forums salty enough to have actually taken a saltwater shower or actually had the word passed that,
"The ship is approaching a rain squall. All hands topside for freshwater washdown, topside showering is authorized", Is @ Dr. Internet.
Those were the good ole daze.

Actually, we did too, but for the radar coolant loop.
Couldn't really shower with it though, the BTs would get their panties in a bunch.

The shower (there were six of them in the compartment) had two buttons. One marked Fresh and the other marked Salt. Both cold. You pushed the button and got about 15 seconds of water, then had to push the button again to get more. You were supposed to wash with Salt and rinse with Fresh. My last ship had a leak somewhere - there was Diesel in the fresh water; so everybody just rinsed with Salt water. Better than Diesel, but not much.
The 'new' Navy has private showers shared by 2 or 4 people, with hot water. WTF, over.

It's a Gama-Goat. I don't remember what transmission it has. They were a death trap over 20 MPH. Supercharged diesel engine. They're one of the engines I'd learned how to set the rack on. And I've seen one eat a wooden clipboard and a phonebook when we were trying to shut it off when the engine ran away.

Yep, that was the one with the SM420. And you had a runaway diesel with it? That musta been "fun"...

The rack wasn't set properly, was teaching other soldiers how to do it and my chief was there so I'd gone to take a phone call... Came back to it screaming... Tried the clipboard on the intake first... It ate that so grabbed a phonebook... It ate that too... Wood chips & paper all over the shop.

They were fun rigs as long as you were going slow. Seen people killed in one when it rolled on the autobahn in Germany.

Gama goat, ada ALMOST choose this for Stnger teams back in the 80s.

Instead they kept the 151 and changed to HMMWV later.

It grenaded. There wasn't a good way to stop them. I forget what it was but I think it was a fuel shutoff was how you normally stopped them. But if the engine ran away the fuel shutoff didn't kill it.

Everyone got a safe distance away and we just watched it blow a hole in the side of the block.
