It grenaded. There wasn't a good way to stop them. I forget what it was but I think it was a fuel shutoff was how you normally stopped them. But if the engine ran away the fuel shutoff didn't kill it.

Everyone got a safe distance away and we just watched it blow a hole in the side of the block.

I've heard of some mechanism on some engines that floats the valves open as an emergency shutdown, but otherwise if its scavenging fuel from the sump, all bets are off!

out on Range 78/79,
walked into the latrine, young private in there washing his uniforms in the long sink. me and the W4 i was with shook our heads and laughed. the damage was already done.

later down the road, found out from my Dad when he was commander of a quartermasters unit, they would set up laundry services during those field problems.

he was shocked to hear in all my years i never heard of such a thing. Month long rotations in the training centers and we would wash our clothes in pelican cases, (Aviation)
