This area has a huge meaning for me.. Both as a senior NCO who went over monthly to donate blood and visiting wounded soldiers & then going there as a wounded soldier.

The Heroes Highway at Balad 2008.

The first thing injured troops would see upon Dustoff's arrival to the theater surgical hospital was the American flag flying above them, a symbol they made it to safety. Seeing the flag, they knew their chance of surviving was high, and if need be, they could be back in the United States in just a few days. The flag that hung over the Heroes Highway is now on display at the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center- Lackland AFB, Texas.

Coalition Casualties totaled roughly 4,800 killed and 37,000 wounded- many of those troops being stabilized and recieving emergency care at Balad.

Notably, the ratio of combat-zone deaths to those wounded has dropped from 24 percent in Vietnam to 13 percent in Iraq and Afghanistan. In other words, the numbers of those killed as a percentage of overall casualties is about 4,100 deaths lower than they might have been in 1970.

It is with profound sorrow that we bid farewell to John Kinsel Sr., one of the last surviving Navajo Code Talkers, who passed away at the age of 107.

From Bougainville and Guam to Iwo Jima, he spoke a sacred language transformed into an unbreakable code — confounding the enemy, safeguarding vital operations, and helping secure victory in the Pacific. His words protected countless lives, even as so many of his brothers in arms never returned home.

His service was quiet.
His impact was immeasurable.

Today, we honor not only his extraordinary life, but also the thousands who fell in the battles his messages helped guide — Marines, sailors, and soldiers whose sacrifices are forever tied to his voice.

Though his voice has fallen silent, his legacy — and theirs — will echo through generations.

So many initially wondered..wtf.
The Grafenwoehr Water Tower has played a significant role in the military history of Grafenwoehr. Built between 1909 and 1911, it was constructed with rechformat bricks and local sandstone. The tower served as a primary means of delivering drinking water from local wells to the kaserne and field camps until 1999. It has been a Boy Scout hut, a radio relay, and a parade reviewing stand for the Bavarian royalty. The tower's original water tanks and pipes are still in use today, and it continues to be a symbol of the area's military heritage.

BTW, the Ohio class battleships in WWII, had 13 inch thick hulls at the waterline.

JBB Iraq? I was on an "Involuntary Blood Donor List" on my last deployment because I have AB+ blood and covid had ZERO effect on my system. Boy was the Command PISSED at me when I got "The Big C" diagnosis (thanks Toxic Exposure) and had to be taken off that list. I gave a lot of blood before that.
