It’s been a while, life gets busy but anyways here are some thoughts, opinions and pics of our trip this year.
Day 1- Fins and Things + Hells Revenge
Day 2- Poison Spider
Day 3- Gemeni Bridges + Long Canyon (non technical but a must in my opinion.
Day 4- Steel Bender Loop/Flat

I’ll try and make this short.
Day 1 I rented a 4 door JK Rubicon with 37s. I was very impressed with it on the highway but I don’t know if they messed with the gearing. There were 3 other Jeeps with me. JR in our Black TJ with 31s, 3” lift and open diffs, and 2 other 4 door JKs with open diffs. 1 with 33s and the other with 35s. Now here’s some details about the trails- my rental went anywhere I pointed it with ease no matter which line I chose on HR and F and T. I did not use the lockers until half way through HR on some tougher lines and I did it just because. Well... JR follows me in the TJ anywhere I went. The other JKs also did fine but I will say that they honestly spun more tires than the TJ. JR is a pretty fearless and aggressive driver and was proving that the 31s are very capable and also the short wheel base was not an issue at all. Now... the end of HR gets pretty hairy in some spots and JR tried to follow dad on a pretty good vertical with a pretty tall shelf on 1 side and a hole in the other and this was the only time the TJ had to back up and take a different line than the big JK and I’m going to guess that if he did have lockers in the rear he probably would have rolled so I’d like to thank the radiator crack for eating my locker funds up for that.

Poison Spider is a must and we did it pretty easily with no issues.

Gemeni and Long Canyon are amazing to drive and we took the GMC and the TJ. Not technical but also a must see/do imo.

We also hiked Corona Arch because there was a dog in our group and they are not allowed in Arches but we did do the Delicate Arch and went to the Sand Dune Arch. Also a must see and do imo.

Steel Bender- this was fun but we started too late (lesson learned)
and it is quite technical with open diffs and 31s. The TJ did very well. The JKs and drivers were a bit less experienced in picking lines and both had nervous wives that probably didn’t help (got dark on us) . One JK had a control arm issue which isn’t too serious and the other was overheating at first. Now it is named Steel Bender for a reason. On the way out we hit the rear about 5-6 times and the JKs a time or 3 also. The loop and flat took us about 5 hours but I do recommend this trail if you start earlier than we did. It has Creek Crossings and a great view of the city. So I really observed the 4 door JKs vs the 2 door TJ and my conclusion is that I really don’t like the 4 doors for a trail rig but it does work well and look good with 37s and above imo. However I love the power of the 2012 and newer JK. For the wheeling that I plan to do abs that we have done, the wheel base wasn’t an issue. I will never own a 4 door Jeep us what I’m saying. I may have a 2 door JK Rubicon one day because the wife wants one and I would definitely build it up. The TJ is a dog on the Hwy but a beast on the dirt and rocks. The 3spd auto and NP231 is a good combo. Now here are some pics and I have them stashed all over the place but this is a start.

That just looks like so much fun, I'm envious! As soon as our youngest is about 6 or 7, I'm going to plan a nice, big trip to Moab! I've been wanting to go there more than anywhere else.

It’s a must do if you’re in to Jeeps and hikes and sights. Lots of ledges and drops and cliffs that can be nerve racking with younger kids but as long as you have them close on the hikes you’ll be fine. There’s a book by Charles Wells that can guide you on the 4 wheel trails from easy with sights to difficult. I’m lucky enough to plan a trip at least once a year and you can’t run out of things to do there. It’s amazing!

Yep, I'm into all of that! Do you suggesting going in Summer, Fall, Spring, or Winter?

Our girls are 2 and 5. Right now they wouldn't last more than an hour, so we're waiting until they are about 7 and 10, that way they'll be a lot easier to manage and enjoy it more.

I suggest Spring or Fall, it gets really hot in the Summer but it’s also pretty unpredictable weather in Moab. It can get really windy at times out of nowhere so pack for warm and cold weather. We had a little of everything on our 4 day trip. My brother in law brought our 3 yr old nephew and I’ll tell you that he’s a demon child lol. He had much less fun than the rest of us lol. He is not pictured because he chose not to leave his hotel with the monster.

I was thinking Spring or Fall as well. I lived in Arizona for a long time, so I know how hot the desert can get in the Summer!

I wouldn't dare bring a 3 year old on a trip like that. They can't even sit still for 5 minutes at a time... it would be a nightmare!

Haha ya and this kid is really bad. His dad was miserable. I highly suggest the Sand Dune Arch for anyone with kids especially. They love it and it’s a pretty cool spot just above the Delicate Arch and everything else that we did on this trip besides Steel Bender which was still great but if you can only get to Moab a few times in your life I’d pass on it. I also love Kane Creek but that’s getting harder as it gets washed out more and more so a really set up rig would be needed.

Everything is less impressive in pics when it comes to this place.

I'm not surprised. We've taken our kids on vacation a few times at this age and it's a nightmare, especially with the 2 year old. It isn't a "vacation" at all at this age, I'll say that much.

Good advice! I've seen some pretty epic photos of Moab, but they're all taken by professional photographers, which is probably the only way to capture the real beauty there.

Agreed! Pics don't do that place justice! Can't wait to go back in 2019. We went in early May, and the weather was pretty nice. Rained on us as we rolled into town, and was nice the rest of the week we were there.

I’ll also say this... and I’m not trying to ruffle any feathers but the RZR crowds are insane out there. At first I was jealous and it looked fun and then they were jerks that only traveled in large swarms that wanted the Jeepers to hurry up. Most of them wouldn’t even look at us or wave at all. I still would like to have one but I vow not to act like that if I ever get one. They would rev their engines loudly as they passed to show their disapproval of the Jeepers in Moab. Sounds backwards to me but I now have the “damn RZRs” attitude.

I don’t like to see packs of anything when I’m on the trails in Moab. For the most part, I have not had any issues with jerks there but I don’t doubt your observation.

It was my first time dealing with it. I’m sure we just ran into a couple of bad crowds but they were definitely not hiding that they were annoyed on 2 different trails.

You would certainly have the advantage in a Jeep if you encountered them on the long Canyon trail. Not much room for them to attempt to pass [emoji4]

Very true and for the most part it’s a long ways down!

They were having a RZR get together when we were there. They were everywhere! Had a parade of them going thru town with a police escort. I quickly learned to hate them as well. Must of been 50 of them coming down from Top of the World as we were going up, so it made for a longer than usual trip.
