In fairness there's some truth to that still in some parts of WV. But that's mostly a Kentucky problem

One of the guys that works for me is based out of WV, I hear some stories.
Oh, I can imagine. I've lived here my whole life, and always lived in the more "civilized" areas of the state. But my job has taken me to every corner of the state (and a lot of the US) and I've seen and dealt with people from all walks of life. I could write a book on the people and things I've encountered in some of the more remote areas of WV. It would be extremely entertaining, but also possibly induce nightmares & PTSD.
The Raleigh/Durham area would likely have a decent job market for you, it is our medical and tech center, and it is a relatively nice area, Durham more so, and Chapel Hill maybe even a little more. (basically I'd suggest staying outside of Raleigh) Traffic in the area can be pretty heavy. Cost of living, well, according to this
I'm a little familiar with Atlanta. It's comparable to Charlotte. I would not live in or around either.

They sent her back here and she's happy about it.

I did my internship in Chicago, that was enough Chicago for me. I went to work early so it only took 10 minutes to get there but I couldn't avoid traffic on my way home and it would take 40 minutes to an hour. Too many people. Fun to visit at times.
My wife was part of the original AscendWV program. We both were originally from there and it ended up working out perfect and got us out of Massachusetts. Our hometown Morgantown was the first city chosen for the program then it rotated to different cities throughout the state. After 5+ years she recently lost her remote work status so we just relocated to Richmond VA. Morgantown is a great place with access to about anything you could want to do in a reasonable distance.
Last I was out there we had a project in Fairmont so we stayed in Morgantown, agree it did seem like a nice place with a lot of opportunity.
So , How is remote work different in WV vs. CO ? It would seem to be at risk anywhere .
That's probably true. But, he'd have an extra $12k in his pocket and likely plenty of in-person opportunities in the area if the remote thing goes tits-up.
But apparently several companies here have already or are beginning to go remote, but want their employees WV based. Some offer office space if/when you want to use it, otherwise independent "business centers" are popping up that, for a fee or membership, gives you access to office space & resources. I guess that model saves the company on overhead while giving the employee some flexibility and freedom.
Yeah same issue I will have to see what the local prospects look like still. But definitely interesting

Reason I ask, Google just committed 2 billion dollars expansion to their data center in Bridgeport AL. 15 miles from where I live.

Not what I do no but I guess it could be related if you worked for them?
Well, the stuff I do does run on the servers in those. But I am not directly involved in it.
Kinda like modern world DBA work. Backend type work for preparing data for analysts, data scientists

Kentucky has entered the chat with all except my wisdom teeth in tact. This must be an Eastern KY thing?
I've considered doing a little FLOCK work... but no commitment, yet.
