Muffler Help

Just under the TJ this weekend and found my muffler had the beginning of a rusting out at lower rear of the muffler. Since I have to replace it, any suggestions as to which muffler I should replace it with? Stock, flowmaster, ETC. I know a six cylinder will not sound like a V8 but I do not want an angry Bumble bee sound like a ricer. Deep rumbles are my favorite.

The Flowmaster 40 series muffler is what I run, and what a lot of other TJ owners run.

It has a nice deep tone, doesn't drone at all, and is not even really loud unless you get on it. When you do get on it, it's a very deep sort of loud too, nothing annoying or obnoxious.

IMHO, this is the perfect muffler for our TJs.

Hey @Chris I know I'm digging up an old thread...but it's not past the year mark yet. =) I haven't seen much documentation on installing these mufflers. Is it an "easy" DIY job or does it require a muffler shop or a mechanic?

Not Chris, but I would think it depends on your skill set. Two options really, weld it on, or clamp it on. Plenty of room to work under our Jeeps, specially if you go with a smaller, not OEM type muffler. I'm running a Magnaflow on my LJ that sounds sweet, but I paid my exhaust guy to weld it up.

I appreciate advice from all sources! I can turn a wrench, sometimes skillfully, but I'm no welder. Sounds like I'll be visiting some local shops. Thanks for the reply.

X2 to this. I paid a muffler shop to do mine, only because I wanted to replace all the piping, and I don't know how to weld. They did it in under an hour and charged me around $230 if I remember. Well worth paying someone else in my opinion, especially since they have a lift!

I'd think if you are just cutting out the old muffler and melting in a new one, shouldn't be too pricy. My LJ I had a hookup on, but on an old 4Runner I had a local shop cut off a muffler and mounted up a new one for $80 or so, a number of years ago.

I have run the flowmaster in the past and agree... great sound, it's also kinda beefy metal wise. Instead of welding you could try the stainless steel band clamps.

You might not need to weld if the factory stuff is still there and things are in decent shape. I pulled the factory muffler off and had a new one on in about an hour and a half. (Skid lowering required). Soak the bolts a couple days prior, cut the outlet pipe off of muffler and unbolt the flange in front of muffler, and put new one up. The tail pipe, on the other hand, could require welding depending on what you start with, how the suspension is set up, and how picky you are. I simply cut off about 1/3 of the tail pipe so it wouldn't hit shock and called it done. YMMV. Should have just got the muffler and made a tail pipe from parts store...wasted money on that CAT back since I threw a big chunk away. Oh well, live and learn. I was hoping to cut some weight but the new Dynomax was only 3 lbs. lighter than the old soot and mud submerged factory muffler. Oh well, at least it's a new muffler. Sounds pretty nice...a bit deeper than stock... but I didn't want too much noise since my top is off 10 out of 12 months. Quiet is good. I think JP mag did a comparison a while back.

Topless ten months out of the year? I'm probably just about the exact opposite. Two months and not all at once. Our summers are usually nice but sporadic....I do a lot of hoisting and lowering when the sun comes and goes.

I'll have to get under my Jeep when I get to see her next. She's living up at my brother's place in the mountains right now. I'm hoping that I can still get the bolts off cleanly. I know everything under there came with the beast when she was new 18 years ago.

I'm just looking for some rumble and growl.

As far as rumble and growl, my son wanted the same in his 98 XJ 4.0. I went to order the Flowmaster 40 and found a better deal on the Super 44 on Amazon. So picked that up. More growly then the 40, but he loves it. Plenty of 4.0 Youtube videos to hear the differences.

@JeepZilla380 Yup, that's been the focus of my morning so far....playing on youtube listening to Jeep's idle and rev. It's driving my wife nuts.

I think I'll be going with the Super 44 but still not sure. Maybe another hour of listening on youtube!

A muffler shop installed my Magnaflow. It's 2" shorter to allow more room to clear my larger fuel tank.
