Navigating engine compatibility: 2.4 engine from 2003 Liberty into 2004 Wrangler

My '04 2.4L engine blew up on me. From what I gather 2.4Ls are hard to come by. I found a 2003 liberty engine.

This article seems to indicate the external features on the engines should be the same.

Here is the big takeaway: The2003 Liberty engine would likely work in a 2004 Wrangler, but with a few considerations:

1. Crankshaft Sensor and Target Ring: The 2003 Liberty engine uses the Next Generation Controller (NGC) setup with a crankshaft that has a bolt-on “target ring” with 32 windows. The 2004 Wrangler also uses the NGC system, so the crankshaft and target ring compatibility should align. However, if the 2003 Liberty engine has a crankshaft with a different configuration, it may need to be swapped or adjusted.
2. Exhaust and Emissions Components: Emissions requirements and sensor locations may differ between the Liberty and Wrangler due to their different platforms. The exhaust manifold, EGR, and A.I.R. systems should be checked to ensure they match or can be adapted.
3. Engine Control Module (ECM) Compatibility: While both models transitioned to the NGC in these years, it’s important to ensure that the sensors, wiring, and ECM connections align. There could be differences in connectors or the engine wiring harness that would need to be modified.
4. Mounts and Accessories: Verify that engine mounts and accessories align between the two models. Differences in mounting points or accessory placement could require modifications.

Pretty sure California wants a same year or newer engine.

Pretty sure you want to stick with your PCM.

You could probably pull your head and put it on the Liberty 2.4 to get most of your plugs and sensors correct...but if you're doing that you'd probably want your head go through and at that point you might as well get your block done too.

I'm assuming of course you don't have a rod hanging out the side or you've already torn down the block and it's been measured out and it beyond saving.

The block is definitely beyond saving, ha

Jeep depot has a block they can build up for me. I think I'll go that route to get a "new" engine. After talking to the jeep depot guys, the 03 liberty engine will not work due to the size of the cam wheel and sensor location

Might want to check out S and J engines out of Spokane WA if you want another price.

Yup, checked there too. They don't have any in stock and are more expensive. Just ordered one from Jeep Depot
