Need Cooling Help for Hemi Swap

Looks like I've joined the mechanical fan club.... Am going to try and add a TJ 4.0 shroud to it after next week when it arrives.

Damn! I didn't get a notification, apologies for leaving the thread hanging. Interestingly enough, I have an update as of yesterday afternoon.....I'll put that in a new post after this.

Ok, to reply to the pic.....outstanding! The hemi LJ mechanical fan setup has been working great, we're just trying to figure the CEL, update coming up in 3...2...1

Update - Success!! The shop has been using the LJ as fill work, but the latest is that they replaced the temp sensor again, but with a Mopar brand sensor, which some folks claim that Mopars are sensitive to off-brand sensors. In addition, they replaced the temp sensor connector with the Mopar repair kit, which is a new sensor with about a foot of wire. In the process of replacing these items, they discovered that a pair of wires in the connector portion of the harness were open and touching. They replaced these parts, and it improved.....it was no longer reading the -40 degrees it had been, which was the lowest the temp sensor was capable of providing. That indicated a breach in the wiring, which was the case, and repaired. So....now it's only reading -7 degrees. Next step was to unplug the AEV black box. BAM!! Jeep is running like a beast with no CEL! Temp sensor is sending the proper signal. The AEV black box was a jumper computer to drive the cruise control (to prevent having to use a dodge ram steering wheel....apparently) and to drive the A/C. We are going to just live without cruise, and they are going to wire the A/C directly. Should be back on the road next week! I have since found another LJ, a 2004 non-Rubicon (obviously, no Rubi til '05) that I'm considering getting for my daughter, but I'm debating, as it drives pretty loosely, it's running an old Skyjacker lift. I'm going to have to go through the entire suspension and steering to feel comfortable with her driving it. Not a huge deal, especially if it was going to be "built." But, I need it on the road, and on the road safely. Not sure I want to drop $5k - $10k on top of the purchase. But, it might just need some tightening up and some fresh bushings, etc. Also, the wind noise coming through the hardtop/windshield area is pretty strong.

Side question - I have all the pop up blockers turned on on my Chromebook, but it's taken a half hour to write this post because the pop ups on the bottom of the screen keep interrupting the typing, so I can't see what I'm typing, can't see what takes and what doesn't take, etc. How can I fix that? It almost makes the site unusable from home. At work, they block EVERYTHING, so the site runs great, but I can't spend more than a few minutes on it at work.

I took my Jeep out last weekend and hit some trails... Ran good with no overheating issues. So fingers crossed I've got it fixed..

OK about the site and pop-ups first....
Become a member... costs $25 I think...

Why not give your TJ to your daughter? As opposed to buying another vehicle and having to dump a lot of money into it... An unknown is worse IMO than a known...
And my daughter started out on a TJ as her first vehicle. And it was a manual so she learned to drive a stick too.

Glad that you got the CEL issue figured out...
Bummer about cruise control and having to do a work around for the A/C.... It would irritate me.

Been thinking about that hard!! My TJ is a stick, and my older daughter couldn't really get the hang of it, but I have faith she could figure it out. The issue, is that I don't have the cash to buy the AEV hemi LJ outright. The money we set aside for my daughter to get a vehicle won't cover the AEV hemi LJ. But, I'm still thinking about it...if I could swing that, I would love to keep both AEVs in the family.

Yep I can totally relate. I guess I'm asking if you bought this other LJ how much might it cost you in the long run?
Belive me I've been there.
My daughter has been through 5 rigs and is only 23.
So between me and her I've spent a lot on rigs....

But you've got to do what works best for you.

To answer your question, it's possible that what it would take to get it where I want it, I would be damn close to me being able to keep my AEV and get the AEV LJ. I'm going to pass. My daughter will continue driving my wife's old Tahoe in the meantime, which is more than I had to drive in HS! ;)

I'd never owned a car that wasn't 30+ years old until I was in the Army for 6 years. And finally bought a new truck.
My daughter finally bought her 1st vehicle on her own a few years ago...
Times have changed.

Been driving the LJ for the past couple of days. Nothing big, just back and forth to work. This weekend, I plan on an extended drive to really see how it's doing. No more CEL, no cooling issues (it is February, so.....), but the fan is louder than $hit! Lack of an underhood liner likely the culprit. LJs came with hoodliners from the factory, but it's not an OEM hood. Power seems strong, trans is shifting nicely. Hemis like to rev.....no issues at all getting up to redline, it doesn't fall off, just keeps going til I let off. This LJ has the AEV Recaros in it, which are bada$$, but the bolsters are pretty firm, which makes getting out of the Jeep a bit of a nut cruncher. When the Jeep is mine, I will likely add a front cage, which will have a grab handle, which should help ingress/egress a little bit.

That's interesting that you feel that the fan is loud.. But I'm not driving mine much on the road but off-road I really didn't notice it more than I did with the electric fan...

Great comment......here's my thinking. I am guessing it's not any louder than my TJ fan with the 4.0. The difference is that I rarely push the TJ past 4,000 RPM, while I'm having a bit of fun with the LJ, so I'm getting past 4k regularly. Also, I should caveat that it's no louder when driving it down the road. I'm talking when I'm at the tail end of a hard push, or am standing still and goosing it. The hemi is a quick rever, and it "comes down" quickly as well, while the fan seems to lag in it's "slowing down" effort as compared to the engine's exhaust note. So, to make a short story long, I would agree with you that it isn't really that loud, even when compared to the electric fan, I'm just noticing it more because 1) it's new, so it's on my mind, and 2) I'm using more of the engine's RPM as I get to know the Jeep.

Yes the urge to romp on it and hear those Hemi horses scream is a factor.

It's been years since I've driven a stock engine Jeep so I really have no comparison.

Not gonna lie, it is fun! I wouldn't mind knowing how an LJ would feel with an AMW swapped 392 and 8hp70! I bet even at my altitude, it would feel like having a tiger by the tail! :)

I'm betting it'd be a BLAST. I'd like to drive one of the supercharged 392 Gladiators.......

Just think back to driving the 30 year old cars in H.S.

I have trouble remembering what I had for breakfast... You want me to remember something from 50 years ago?
