Need help on a wrangler

This is not a Tj but a YJ
My friend has an 89 wrangler. 4.2, 5 speed manual it sounds like a garbage disposal when we start it.

He keeps going through starters, we have tried 6 different starters and replaced the flywheels twice. We have shimmed the starters and did the paint trick on the teeth to see how far we need to shim. According to everything I have read you should not have to shim a YJ at all. I have gone to different parts stores and compared starters to make sure we are getting the correct starter, we have the proper flywheel and checked to make sure it was not out of round.

This Jeep has me stumped, the transmission housing isnt bent and the power cables for the starter are in good shape and the connectors are clean. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this before and came out victorious?

Not a 100% sure yet. I'm just trying to narrow it down. You shouldn't be going through starters and flywheels like that.

How long has he had this Jeep and when did the problem start?

It had the problem when we first bought it, we thought it just needed a new flywheel. Still waiting on the response

If it makes noise when the clutch is out, but doesn't make noise when you push it in (or vice versa), then it's the throwout bearing.

The other issue it might be is teeth that broke off the flywheel (from improper starting) and are jangling around inside the bell housing.

Either way, this is related to the flywheel, starter, or possibly throwout bearing, from what I gather.

It still makes the sound and it has a whole new luk clutch kit in it. We put it in when we replaced the first flywheel. Clutch barely has 1K miles on it

Was it making the sound before you installed the new clutch kit?

Yes. when we put in a new flywheel, we decided to put in a new clutch kit so we knew everything was fresh. I want to know what is causing this issue so we don't keep busting teeth off his flywheel. Ive searched all over the internet and seen people with this issue but they don't ever post the solution.

Well if it wasn't making this noise before the new clutch and flywheel, then there is no doubt in my mind that you installed something incorrectly.

Unfortuntely at this point you're going to have to take the transmission out and inspect it. It should be very obvious what the issue is once you take it apart, probably because you'll see missing flywheel teeth and wear areas.

I'm guessing you installed the flywheel incorrectly, or the throwout bearing. But all any of us can do at this point is guess... to figure out what's actually happening, it's going to require tearing things apart.

Your original post should be more clear. You said, "it sounds like a garbage disposal when we start it". From that statement, you're saying that it only sounds like garbage when you start it, right?

I'm simply trying to figure out if it's making the noise ALL of the time, or only when you try and start it. I'm under the impression (based off the thread so far), that it's making the noise all the time.

Well I hope some one figures it out. It's bugging the hell out of me and it's not even my Jeep.
Do you think the motor could have been changed out for a different year, make, or model?
It still sounds like a starter and/or flywheel problem. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with the starter or the flying wheel. they just might be the wrong one for that motor/year. Would you be able to check the S/N's on the engine and trany and see if they are right for that Jeep?

check the pilot bearing you said you changed the fly wheel did ya install a new pilot bearing also check the keeper clip on the clutch fork
