I'm setting up my Dana 35 with new gears, bearings, etc. On the pinion I'm not using a crush washer, I'm using a sleeve and shims. I used a setup nut to get my pinion preload to about 10 inch-lbs and torque was about 175 ft lbs with the setup nut. When I installed the seal and the new nut I torqued it down just a bit over 200 ft lbs and also used some grease on the seal. When I checked my preload after all of that I was getting like 30 to 40 in-lbs.
On my dana 30 I just did, on my final torque, I had some threads missing on the pinion shaft, so on this axle I was nervous about that much torque and I figured at that torque I was deforming the threads of the new nut rather than just crushing pinion bearings. Also I didn't have the seal installed when setting up my preload. I would imagine the seal would only add a few inch lbs. So before I tear this apart, do you all agree it needs to come apart?
