New noise from the rear

I've got a new noise from th rear end of the TJ.

When I hit a bump or chuckhole, it sounds like a shock bolt is loose. They aren't, checked those and they are tight. When I pull and push on the top of passenger side rear tire, it makes a noise like it's moving. Just a little "scritch, scritch". The drivers side doesn't make that noise. Rechecked the lug bolt torques and they are all fine, and the wheel is mounted on the hub solidly.

Am I in the process of loosing an axle or bearing in my Dana 35?

I'd really not like that very much.

Did you check the trac bar? Loose trac bar bolt did that on my 4runner. Cant speak to your other problem but it doesn't sound good! Seems like it could be the bearing

Nope, didn't check the trac bar. I will though. I had the rear trac bar disconnected awhile ago putting new springs in, so maybe it's gotten loose? Thanks!

I was really hoping to postpone the Super 35 kit and gears until fall.

Definitely check all the suspension connections first. The axles will have a bit of in and out play, depending on how many miles they have. It would be hard to check for up and down play with the wheel/drum in place. Best to pull the wheel and brake drum to check for in/out and up/down play.

Thanks @Rob5589, I'll do just that. The SE has just over 100k on it right now, so it's past due for a good going over. I have no idea what the PO has or hasn't done. Sounds like I'll be flat on my back under the Jeep for a couple of days this week before work.

Sport Edition

It's the base model, no options version of the TJ with the four angry squirrels for a power plant. It's the TJ most everyone loves to hate on. They even economized on the name, and saved a few pennies each on the letters they dropped from Sport Edition. The back seat was a no cost option in most of the SE's. Great Jeep to start with when building from scratch.

Good to know! I found myself, before joining this forum, thinking I new a lot about jeeps but goodness was I wrong. But I love being able to learn all I can and then help out orhers. Lots of fun!

My ego won't let me admit that I still don't know squat about TJ's, but I really don't. The collective hive mind here knows more about the ins and outs of the TJ though, than any other place on earth. From the most mundane to the most esoteric. Between the bunch of us, I doubt there's anything we can't eventually figure out and fix. ...and no question is too lame or too basic to generate a decent discussion on. Heck, I specialize in lame, stupid and repetitive and most everyone still talks to me!

The collective hive mind here knows more about the ins and outs of the TJ though, than any other place on earth. From the most mundane to the most esoteric. SE is SE. I don't really think it stands for anything in particular. Jeep just had to name the no frills base model something, and all the cool names were already taken.

SE gets used across the board in automobile models. I have had several over the years of many makes and models that went by SE. Usually a base model. Probably means Strapped (for cash) Edition.

Yeah,+1 on the recommendations to check your suspension. I'd look at all those rubber bushings as they dry rot and get beaten up and worn out.
