My sister has a 2002 TJ Wrangler X and asked for my assistance so I am coming to the experts. I drove her Jeep a few times and loved it but now I find it layed up with a layer of dust. She pulled out the front seats and disposed of them. Her complaint was that they were aftermarket with kludged brackets. Her stated objective for me is find OEM bases/brackets & front seats. Fair enough, it seems 97-03 is the range I am targeting.

BASES: I see what appear to be stock seat mounts on eBay for around $200/pair. Is it true that only the passenger seat should tilt forward? Are driver tilt bases available? Does the phrase "roll & tumble" or "slide and tumble" apply to the 97-03 year range?

SEATS: Any advice? Should I be limiting my search to strictly TJ 97-03 seats? Are there variations/options in this group? Are they fixed or is recline available?

Thanks for any assistance. We are in Georgia - she is east side of state and I am west. I hope to help her get this jeep back on the road and get her signed up on this forum!

I wont be too much help, but I have an 02 X as well. The passenger seat on mine is the only one with the tumble function.

As for bases, why not search some junkyards first? If they're in rough shape, some sanding / painting would be cheaper than 200 for the ebay pair.

Best of luck, and tell your sister welcome to the TJ world!

TJs came with both fold-n-tumble driver's side seats and ones that did not. All years should have a fold-n-tumble passenger seat. The seats changed in 2003, but I am not sure of the mounting brackets, but believe those are different also.

The factory seats in all years reclined.

2003 seats got a little wider. I started getting wider back in the 1980's. They also got a little lower. I am pretty sure this was the seat brackets that lowered. They also became a sort of hybrid suspension seat the way the springs were placed. I find the stock hi-back to be the only thing I can sit on for more than a few minutes without triggering my sciatic.
