I did a search on this and it seems that if you have a vacuum leak it defaults to defroster. No matter what setting I use it comes out the dash vents.

Theres levers going into heater box that sometimes break and they are a REAL pain to fix. What I was doing was, I cut a length of plastic hangar.You stick it down the defroster vents slowly and you can feel the door open..DEFROSTERS !!! Did that for years until I had the time to fix. You have to take drivers seat out in order to look under dash without breaking your back..
