Hello,

I picked up a '99 TJ and the speedo does not read. It is definitely an issue within the case or the speedo gear (or shaft). If I put a drill on the end of the VSS the speedo will work. The previous owner changed the transfer case and I am wondering if the speedo gear shaft is too short. How can I tell what length should be in there. Its a model 231 J case

Thanks

I was thinking that but unsure how to clock it. I tried it all 3 ways as well

I had mine clocked wrong and knocked off some of the plastic.

ok,
thanks for info. My gears are still good. Might just need to keep adjusting

Do you have a stock 231 transfer case or did the PO install a SYE?

Might want to get a mirror or a borescope in that hole and see if the shaft in the 231 still has it's gear.

If it's missing inside then that's your problem.

And then I would recommend a SYE, 4" springs and 35s to fix it. =)

sooooo

the PO I think changed the case. It does not have an SYE BUT should the case have a blue gear on the shaft? I cannot find it in the parts breakdown but I do see it when people add a SYE

It isn't an issue of adjusting it. The speedo gear is marked with number of teeth it has. The speedo drive has numbers on it with a range at positions around the perimeter of the flange. When you match those up to the number on the gear, that goes straight down at 6 o:clock. Stock 231 has a dot there, aftermarket does not but the location at straight down doesn't change. When you get it close, the clamp fork ends line up in opposing slots to lock it in and final locate it.

No, the speedo drive gear on the stock shaft is part of the shaft, not a separate slip-on drive gear.

Interesting.

My SYE shaft had a blue gear.

Went to the shop and snapped pics of my original 231 shaft for reference.

Mines a 97...might have changed over the years.

That link I shared is someone who had the exact same problem the other day and fixed it. There's even a video with how to index it.

How many teeth does your gear have?
