2001 Jeep Wrangler SE makes a constant thumping noise when the key is turned on and while driving. Anyone have an idea what it could be?

Is it suspension related? does it correlate with bumps in the road, or when you say constant is it consistent all the time regardless of speed, road condition? Does it do it when parked, but engine running?

Whenever I open up the dash on mine I discover all kinds of lost pens, forks, and drinking straws and occasional wrench.

I was thinking the blend door, but you mention "constant" and threw me off the trail......LOL
