NP241J Transfer Case 4wd Indicator Switch Problem

I've searched the threads and haven't found the solution to this.

PO swapped in a NP241J xsfer case. I don't know what the xsfer case came out of but the switch doesn't look like anything I see on jeep parts sites and the wiring connector is different. So, the PO just left it unplugged. I just put in a Crown Automotive J8134473 Transfer Case Switch and plugged up the connector. Now, here's the issue. The 4wd indicator light is on when in 2wd and goes off when I put it in 4wd. I'm guessing I have the wrong switch. If so, what's the correct switch?

Hi John,
I don't know if you ever managed to get your light working. Your problem seems to be that the NP241 internals are backwards to the switch operation of the NP231.
I just finished wiring up the switch wiring on my 231 transfer case switch. I'm not sure what switch you had in the NP241 to begin with. But, I did a little research on it. The one that will work is Mopar part number 56006755 4WD Mode Transfer Case Switch for 1991-2001 Jeep XJ MJ ZJ WJ. Now the issue is the connector (that may have been the same issue you started with). Yours on the TJ is only two pin and the 56006755 is four pin. But, the 56006755 switch has two sets of contacts not one set like the Crown switch that the NP231 use. If you can scrounge a connector to fit the four pin it will work. You'll just need to ohm out the normally closed set of contacts and slice those into your existing harness. I'm kind of guessing here as I'm not there to check exactly what you have. But, if you are looking for something to try that would be my easiest path. Otherwise, you could install a relay in the wiring to the transfer case switch and use its Normally closed set of contacts for your light. I can walk you through that if you would like to do it.

At this point in time, not having the indicator light doesn't bother me enough to spend any more time on it. It'll be a good project to tackle when I bored. I'll post again if I ever get this resolved.

Thank you for that. The Standard switch offerings have stopped working over the years due to some manufacturing slop so this will be a great test and solution if we can make them work.
