For future reference, If you change your mind on modifying the existing transfer case shifter assembly, you can find them for $30-40 all in from dead jeeps.
I don't think they have a np242 shifter listed on the site but they have several np242 transfer cases, so if you call them they'll probably have a few that haven't been pulled from a jeep yet.
