NV3550 leak

2002 TJ, 4.0 manual.
Just bought this jeep, again, after selling it to a buddy back in 18.
He said it had a leak so i checked the trans fluid to confirm.
I pulled the skid plate and transfer case and found that it was truly leaking from the rear seal.
I cleaned the shaft good and installed the new seal.
After driving for a short trip, it is leaking again from the trans/transfer case again.
I put Royal Purple in it so i know it's coming from the transmission.
I DID NOT CHECK
THOROUGHLY FOR A BURR on the shaft, but i did clean it well with brake cleaner and clean rags.
I'm thinking i need to pull the transmission for a more thorough inspection.

Is the seal in backwards? Can’t tell in the pic if I’m looking at a sealed bearing or a backwards seal.

I think you want output, not input. =)

Might be, probably is, nothing more than a bad seal. What brand did you use?

Little RTV on the outside and a touch of grease on the inside lip goes a long way.

Little RTV on the outside and a touch of grease on the inside lip goes a long way.

I would definitely try another new seal before I pulled the trans. Timken or National are the 2 brands I go to when possible. Skim coat of RTV around the outer edge and I tend to get aggressive on the grease on the inner lip for all things seal-related. Having said that, I've forgotten to grease that inner lip on more than one occasion and it is a sure fire way to make your seal leak more or less immediately.

Update.
I finally got around to diagnosing this leak, CORRECTLY.
After changing the rear seal and watching the fluid drip from the skid plate after, I thoroughly washed the trans and transfer case only to find it wasn't the seal.
The rubber gasket on the shift tower was the culprit.
Ordered and replaced the old one,,, problem solved.
