OEM Audio in a TJ

My '04 TJ Sport came with an aftermarket JVC KD-R820BT PDF ........ complex beyond belief !
Difficult to adjust, no push buttons, need glasses to read the clock ....... the list is long of 'special features' ...

Looking at the Sales Brochure with the Standard/Optional equipment for this model ..... it comes with a nice AM/FM CD radio. Has a clock that you can actually see, and some buttons to change stations.

Am going to purchase the OEM radio ..... 1 Factory Radio has been good to deal with in the past. I purchased the OEM Optional radio for my '02 Dodge/Cummins 4x4 ..... very happy with a radio that is 'user friendly'

I know many younger folks tear the OEM audio equipment out immediately ..... well, I'm going the other way ...
Anyone else like me that's had enough of POS Hi-Tech stuff ?

The ONLY thing I need in a radio whatsoever is an auxiliary jack. If I have that I'll be just fine. That way I can plug in my iPhone and listen to music from my library that way.

CDs and all that is absolutely dead to me.

I usually just use my aux jack for music but ever since my province put in a new law that if you get caught even laying one finger on your phone you get $350 fine plus vehicle impound for 1 week or more I've begun looking for a very basic Bluetooth One.

The factory radios have been fitted with an Auxiliary input/output jack on the faceplate ....
The one that is a 'plug and play' is Option Code RBK .... p/n P05064354

That was a nice offer derekmac .... much appreciated, but I'll be ordering the one with the Auxiliary Plug.

I am like you, in that the OEM unit is all that I need...

The biggest advanage of OEM is no one wants them, so they won't rip it out of your dash.

I wouldn't mind an aux. in, though...

The last time I installed audio equipment in a vehicle of mine was an 8 track tape player in my '62 Chevy Impala. That was in 1970. I wish I still had the car ... the 8 track not so much.

I have the best and worst of radios in my Jeeps - both have good and bad features. My '03 TJ has the original radio and the 7 speaker system. The sound is great and it's easy to use and see everything. The only thing missing is an auxiliary jack. I've seen radios altered to add a jack but I'm not sure of the details. My '04 LJ has an Alpine radio but with the 4 speaker system. The sound is good but not as good. I attribute that to the speaker system. It does have auxiliary and USB jacks though. It's a pain in the butt to use, especially with gloves on, and I have to rely on memory because I can't see anything.

Given a choice I'd take the factory unit with an auxiliary jack.

On the one I saw (on-line) the radio looked original and the aux jack was separate. The guy basically wired it through the back of the radio and mounted the jack separately through a hole he drilled in the console. It was very clean and functional.

It will have this marked on the faceplate in white letters. Upper right hand quadrant ....

Yes ... mine is an RBK too.

This isn't the one I was thinking of but it's the same idea. If you go onto YouTube you can find a lot of information about how to add an aux jack. It's almost that there's TOO MUCH information!

It seems fairly straight forward ...

Purchased the 'RBK' slider version OEM radio ....
Local installer did the job ....
Saved the aftermarket speakers, removed the stacked amps, and the over engineered JVC KD-R820BT ...
Have decent sound, clock, and easy to use controls.
Happy now !!

wow i assumed those tweeters just ran through a passive cross-over from the front left and right channels, very cool that the oem stereo actually has separate channels for the tweeter. can you control the volume on them independent. their positioning seems like such a waste now.

Looking for the plug/connection for the sub-woofer in the console ....... sub-woofer has 4 wires. Found a 12 pin plug tucked under the console ....... anyone know what this is for ? Are the sub-woofer wires included in this wiring bundle ?
