Paint Restoration

Just bought a 2006 Wrangler X so I will probably be asking a lot of daft questions, here is one.

I don't know anything about auto paint. The hood used to have a decal on it which has been removed but looks like it damaged the paint or the clear coat.

Is there some magic restoration product or does the hood have to be resprayed?

Welcome from NY from an 05 X owner. I would get a buffer and start with the least abrasive polish first. I think that is just adhesive residue and not clear coat damage.

If the decal was on for too long, you'll always see the outline of the letters or the difference in paint color IMO. If you can't make it look good enough to your satisfaction, black it out or try CAT-B-GON.

Take your hand and see if you can feel if there's adhesive residue left over from those.

If so, you can take some lacquer thinner or equivalent and put it on a rag, hold it over those spots for a while to soften, and either scrape with a plastic scraper or another rag and wipe off the residue.

Then compound and polish will be your next step, whether it had residue or not. If you're new to polishing a rotary polisher will be hard to avoid swirls with. This can be done by hand but just takes some patience.

At a paint correctors eye you'll always see the difference, even with mild wetsanding (which not worth it in this case imo), but you can make it look a whole lot better that's for sure.

The paint was damaged, the hood needs a respray but I don't want to do that right now so I decided to cover it with an AI generated decal. Andy
