Hi - My interior khaki passenger airbag trim was a bit dingy and there were a few small black spots. I took a typical trim cleaner to them hoping to remove which resulted in making larger black spots and it seems that my airbag trim was painted khaki but originally black underneath. It has a tacky rubbery texture to the touch, different from all other khaki interior trim which is a smooth hard plastic texture. I assumed that a previous owner replaced it with a black one and DIY painted it khaki, but now as I research this more, I’m seeing and reading about other tan and khaki airbag trim showing with black underneath where the lighter colors were scratched or rubbed off. Is this case - did Jeep paint black airbag trim lighter interior colors at the factory?
It’s a major freaking eyesore now and my OCD will require that I repaint it. Worth going through the hassle of getting the 10mm ratchet wrench and trying to wrestle it out to prep and repaint, or do I just do an excessive masking job and paint It in place? I already have the top and doors off regularly so I’m wondering if a thorough masking might be wiser, but never tried and worry about overspray. I’ve painted many JK trim pieces off the Jeep in the past with success but this particular TJ trim piece reads like it’s a pita.
