Please help identify this hose

2001 TJ 4.0

I was checking under the Jeep for anything unusual and I found a mysterious hose (since I can't determinate what it is).

On one end it has a removable cap and the other end has a plastic elbow joint broken off. The broken end was dangling near the transmission and I moved it up to take a photo.

Green arrows point to either end in question.

Does anyone recognize where this goes and what it does?

From the looks of the hose type, those are typically used for venting. Is the transmission missing it's vent hose?

My 2004 4.0 has nothing there. Probably not helpful but wanted to state it. A couple questions then.

1) Just to clarify, the red box is your oil dipstick, right?

2) The yellow line, is your mystery hose sealed/braised/glued/something to the tube with the teal box? If so, where does the teal line go if you follow it off the picture to the right? The pic makes it look like your hose and the teal hose are connected at the yellow line.

3) The purple line, is your mystery hose just floating there pinched between the dipstick and the head? Or the valve cover? Or securely fastened?

The white dust cap is typically up by the back of the head. Both manual and autos are vented.

the 32RH definitely doesn't have a vent tube. I think the 42RLE does. No idea on manuals.

I will have to double check after work. That being said, it is looking more like it is a vent hose for the transmission.

Yes it does. Now that I have a direction to investigate, it would be helpful to state this has an AW4 swap.

1) Red box is the transmission dipstick.
2) Yes the yellow line is what is in question. No what is marked in teal is my throttle cable to the transmission (sorry for not specifying). What is marked in yellow I bent up and is connected to the end on the right green arrow
with the broken plastic elbow joint.
3) the purple line is connected to the teal line. Its one of throttle cables.


Thanks for all the responses. I'll be looking for the transmission breather vent hose when I get off work tonight to verify if that is what it is.

Sorry about the delay.

It is confirmed to be my AW4 vent hose. It took me some time to find where it was supposed to be but eventually I was able to locate it. This picture I found online helped pinpoint where it is (very top near bell housing).

Apparently its been missing for years (along with my T case vent) so I will look for the plastic elbow joint that clips in place and add a hose to it. Granted there's nothing stuck inside.

Note: it hasn't been leaking from the top.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction to investigate. Now its time to find that plastic piece that clips in.

Not sure how easily it will clip in. I assume it's supposed to be water tight.
Also, if possible, run new longer hoses to both the trans. and xfer. cases.
Then you will be able to tie them up higher on the dipstick or firewall.
