Can someone tell me the purpose of the pressure switch on the power steering pump system ? Does it simply turn on a warning light when the pressure is low ?

Power Steering Pressure Switch

It sends a signal to the ECM when pressure exceeds a set point. It's purpose is to bump up the idle when working the steering while remaining stationary. Easy to test; turn the wheel on pavement almost to the stops while not moving and listen to the engine response. It should bump up the idle as the engine has to work harder. It probably comes into play more with bigger rubber and A/C equipped Jeeps.
