Primer Color from factory

I have a Solar Yellow 2005 TJ Sport and am getting ready to paint and install new fenders. Does anyone know the primer color that Jeep used for the original paint?

That's an interesting question. I assume you're trying to match the factory shade very closely to OE. I would assume these Jeeps were all coated in the same standard medium gray primer for production reasons. Maybe someone will chime in with a solid answer, and maybe some factory production photos to back it up.

If you're doing a total repaint, I don't think it will matter. I can guarantee no one will notice a difference as long as your panels match.

I don't know what the original primer color was, but I just repainted the fenders and hood on my solar yellow Jeep and I used gray primer.

Can you sand an area down to see the primer color?

If you take off the lower door hinge, the backing plates is accessible. Mine is green on one side, grey on the other.

My daughter's 98 was OEM med. grey where the white paint fell off of the windshield frame .

The original primer color is almost exactly the same shade as the layer of galvanized coating on the base metal. Almost, because when you're removing paint for welding, you can just barely tell the difference between the two so you know when you are down to bare metal.
