Question for electrical gurus: Wiring a dual battery setup to support a 24 volt winch

Most lower amperage combination systems either use a step up or step down module to convert between 24 and 12 volts. IIRC, a Prius has a 200 volt main drive system, and then a 12
volt step down module to power the accessories.

The issue is that the step up or step down modules can only support a limited amount of amperage. So whichever system doesn’t get the alternator is almost entirely reliant on the battery to take spikes in power consumption.

...and a 24 volt, 200 amp+ step up module is just crazy.

Not a viable solution for a winch. Lots of Ideas above, none are practical for a 24 volt winch.

That’s really my point.
Unless he’s willing to install a 2nd alternator and add at least 2 more batteries, which is a hell of a lot of work and expense, it’s not going to work well.
Far easier to run a 12 volt winch and beef up the 12 volt system to support it

I know price has a lot to do with this but the good old Warn 8274 has almost the same line speed.

If you compare the 12V numbers the 8274 beats it. I'm a huge fan of the 8274 and have had one on my last 3 Jeeps. You can buy a used one of CL and then update it with a newer motor to match the numbers of the new winch. There are a ton of writeups online about refreshing one. Just an idea.

8274's are hard to come by around here. Even though every Jeep and crummy seemed to have one bolted to the front end when they first came out and for years afterwards. Warn is a home town company. About two and a half hours from me. Not a lot of them show up used here, they just get moved from rig to rig until they're junk. They end up under the bench in the machinery shed.

This was an exploration into what is possible. Line speed is nice, but I'm not a competitor and rarely in a hurry. A Warn or even an Engo suits me just fine.

Okay I see them for anywhere from $300-1000 on CL up here in WA. I bought my last one for $300 and they guy met me halfway. Was just throwing ideas for you out there. I'd never do the dual motors like they do in England but some of that tech is great to use on our winches. I know some don't like them as they feel it affects the cooling of the Jeep but I have never had a issue with it.
