Re-gearing: 4.0 with 33s

Another option is to keep an eye out for a set of LJ axles (or a dana 44 optioned tj). I've seen them frequently for around 1k in the Dallas area. They come with 3.73s which are perfect in my opinion if your jeep ever sees highway drives and it definitely shouldn't struggle on hills or feel like you're towing a couple thousand pounds. This way it ends up being cheaper than a gear swap and you get a better rear end out of it, if you feel up to swapping axles.
The guy has the 42rle. There’s no way 373 will solve his problem. That gear ratio isn’t even close to what he needs.

513 for Dana 30/35 is the best you can do.

Different opinions, who would have thought?

I'll post the gear ratio comparisons in a bit. The opinions become far less broad after that. They diminish further for those who have driven larger tires with proper gearing.

I'm well past that stage. My point is that you can't change some peoples minds and they are content with what they have. I know a guy that beats the crap out of his 4 banger with 36s and stock gearing. He thinks it's the shit. I drove it and I've ridden on an 80 year old tortoise at the petting zoo that had more get up and go.

Yeah, though 4.10s were probably be ideal the 3.73s are just fine.
I have been keeping my eyes out for new axles on fb marketplace. I am still in between regearing or axle swap.. In a dream world I would find a set of D44s with 5.13 gears already in them hahaha but I def appreciate all of the input. I am moving to Colorado or Florida soon after I graduate from school. My setup doesnt feel bad here in illinois because its so flat but if I move to CO I am sure I will feel the need to regear it hahaha

No sad faces, I loved my 32RH and would love to have it back again. For the 32RH go with 4.10 gearing for 33's and you'll love the combination.
I’ve got a 32RH, 4” lift, on 33’s and 4:10’s. I think it works well overall, and am happy with it.

I considered 4:56’s, but engine rpm’s would be quite high at freeway speeds and gas mileage would suffer. My gearing nets me 12.5-13mpg highway.

I am really confused over all of this gearing stuff. I have the 42rle with what I assume is stock gears, I will have to check here soon. I bought the jeep with the tires already on I am not sure if the owner changed them or not. But when I am on the interstate and turn overdrive off, I can sit at 65mph at exactly 2500 rpm, 70 2800 rpm. Is this not ideal? It doesnt seem slow or anything, but I am also not sure what a stock jeep drives like so I have no reference point.

Imagine if you didn't have to turn off the OD.

And my rpm’s at 65 are roughly 2800 so I can pull a grade that much easier than you at 2500.

But if you’re not pulling many hills, or are fine with the pulling power you have then you don’t have to worry about anything, just enjoy.
