Re-gearing

I know there’s probably 5000 of these posts but you guys are extremely specific and helpful, so I’m gonna ask. I have a 2003, stick, 2.3 wrangler that had 33’s on it when I bought it. It was a dog. 5th gear was completely useless. I went down to 31’s and it’s much better. My question is, what gears do I need to put in my axles? It’s got 4.10’s now according to Chris’ build sheet link from a different thread. 4.88? 5.13? Want to get some acceleration back. I get it’s a PT cruiser motor but I wanna do what I can. Thanks guys

Went down to 31’s, sorry, but thank you for the input. Probably gonna order some 4.56’s gears

I would want 4.88 for 31’s with a 2.5L or 2.4L 5-speed.

You have to get underneath and check the axle for what gear ratio you have with the 2.4 as unlike the 2.5 not all of them had 4.10. If you plan on going back to 33s and you are not hanging out on the freeway I would lean towards the 4.88. A lot of folks forget about 32x11.50 tires and I would run those with 4.56.

I am surprised at the suggestion for 4.56's for 33's & a 2.4

Last year I did 4.56's with 33's and 4.0 5spd and it's dead nuts perfect

Factory tire size should have been 215/75R15 (26.8), new size is 31x10.5 (29.8”).

My math on the calculator says 70 mph on 4.10 is 2987 rpm. My math on 4.56 with 31’s says 2984 rpm. This makes 4.56 for 31’s almost an exact match for stock in terms of rpm.

4.88 with 31’s will be 3194 rpm. A bit lower than stock, but would have better acceleration than stock and would be a better return on investment for the money spent IMO. Paying all that money to get back to nearly exact stock rpm on larger tires wouldn’t be the best choice in my eyes.

I second this from Jerry. Changing out the 3.73s to Yukon 4.56s was a game-changer. Best, most effective mod I've ever done on my '06 2.4L with 33s.
