Replacing drivers side axle

I think when you said "matches the front" made him think exactly matches the front, even though I personally understood what you meant, I could see it confusing some, since it doesn't actually match the front other than shorter vs longer.

I know you enjoy talking condescendingly to people, many times warranted, but I don't appreciate it, as I'm not an idiot. And NO ONE is talking about mail Jeeps, and you know it.
Matches the front, figure it out or don't. And no, I don't know that anyone isn't talking about Right Hand drive rigs, but I do know a perfect way to never have to worry about it and that is to use the correct terminology. Right side, left side, front, back. Even you can figure that out, right?

If you can't tell the difference between the long side and the short side on the front axle given that one is over twice as long as the other, not much more I can do for you.

I clearly can tell the difference. It is the way you put it that was confusing. Seems I figured out what you said, but it might be more clearly written next time. Thanks.

Okay, I think I get it as the front pumpkin is offset enough to the eye and they match to the rear. Sorry for my ignorance.

Don't apologies for being ignorant, the forums are supposed to help folks, not be smart asses to someone when one ask question, especially when you ask for help from a person that has a lot of knowledge on the subject.

Doesn't sink in.

I was being helpful, willingly so. The easy way to remember which is the long side on a Dana 44 is it matches the front. Not the front cover, not the front knuckles, not the front control arms, but the front axle lengths. That is what was being discussed, which side is the long or short side or the length of the axles, nothing else. What is the long side and what is the short side? Matches the front. It doesn't get any more simple than that and why that would confuse anyone is beyond my comprehension.

Think I’ll forgo doing that again, but Jerry B was kind as always. I like to measure twice and cut once. There were simple ways of answering my simple question and I knew there is a long side because I had them apart before. Just couldn’t recall which side

The question was answered. Maybe there is some hostility since I went with Centric brakes. Don’t know, but they work great.

Enjoy the day. Geez life is too short.

Maybe so, but when one is asked to help because they have vast knowledge they should just give an answer preferably in way that one can learn.
I have, at any given time between 10 and 15 Engineers working for me that range from fresh out of school to Senior Types (guess that makes me a Senior Senior or old fart) and when I get a question from one, especially the fresh out of college ones, I answer in a way to educate them keep them asking more questions so they can learn, not in a condescendingly non-direct way.

It gets no more simple than the rear Dana 44 matches the front. The front has an obvious long side and an obvious short to anyone that cares to look at them. Not sure why that is so difficult?

And no, I never care what brakes you go with, ever.

The method Blaine suggested is one he taught me years ago and at least to me, it was and still is for me a butt-simple way to remember which is which side is longer or shorter. I really don't understand all grief over his suggestion, it would have been quickly understood by those not looking to find fault. Some here like to find fault with answers depending on who gave the answer.

The long and short sides of the f/r axles match each other if so long as the rear axle is not a Dana 35. Only if the rear is a Dana 35, then the long and short sides are opposite. Was that explanation really too hard to understand? Really?

The reaction to this butt simple method as you put it has been very baffling to me so I started asking folks who know nothing about Jeeps what the problem. Kat drives them, she does not work on them. I asked her. If I tell you the rear Dana 44 shafts which are long and short match the front, which one goes where? She said, the short one goes on the left. I've got two construction guys here that are working on the deck. They know absolutely nothing about Jeeps, 4 wheel drive vehicles and they are not mechanics. I hollered up at them from the driveway. Hey, that rig has two different length rear axle shafts. They go in the sides that match the front, which one goes on which side. I was pointing at a HP 30 under the front of a TJ. They said, short side goes over on that side and they pointed at the steering wheel.

Sure, I could have said that the longer one goes on the right side. Then the next time you mix them up, you get to hop online and ask again. If I tell you how to figure it out, then that is knowledge you own that no one can take away from you. If you don't want that, next time just put in your post that you want the info spoon fed and you don't want to learn. I know not to answer then.

Ah, I was going to just post my first question and a simple answer could have been, "you got it right", but it isn't worth it. Seems pretty intense out that way. Geez.

I get the method, but in my question I was confirming I was correct, so it seemed like he was correcting me instead of saying, yeah you got it right. I was already correct, but wanted to make sure I was correct.

On a positive note, I will remember they match each other on Dana 44's. Talk about one heck of a hard lesson for a confirmation that I was already correct in the first place.

As another data point, my neighbor who swings by for a chat every evening got asked the same question as we were sitting there look down the driveway at the front of a TJ. I asked- If I told you that the long and short rear axles matched the front, which side would you install the longer one into? He pointed at the right side and said that one is at least twice as long so I would put it on that side in the back.

Mind you, he is a retired carpenter and the only vehicles he has worked on are an old VW many many moons ago. He knows shit from Shinola about anything with drive axles front and rear.

I wasn't correcting you, I was giving you a way to know if you are correct. A bit less defensiveness goes a long way to slow down the butthurt.
