Resistance in auto 42RLE shifter

2006 auto with 80k miles.

When i first start the jeep and move the shift lever from Park to Drive it is easy to move with minimal normal resistance. But after driving the jeep for a period of time and going to shift back from Drive to Park there is definite resistance in the shift lever. Imagine pushing a stick through mud for lack of a better explanation.
Fluid level is full. Was replaced about a year ago when the valve body was replaced. I've only noticed this issue that passed 2 months or so.

All my google searches bring up results for manual transmissions and nothing beneficial to me.

Any ideas where to begin the troubleshooting?

Sounds to me like the exhaust is heating up the cable and making it hard to shift.

Weird that this would be a new issue. Been running the same exhaust 2+ years. I will check that next time i drive it and check back. Thanks.

You got the egg laying the chicken. It isn't the fault of the exhaust. The cable housing has a heat shield on it that may be compromised or moved and the housing could be deteriorating from excess heat. I'd replace the cable and go from there.

I've seen them brittle enough that when you tried to shift it, the cable housing blew out and the cable popped out rendering the shifter inoperable.

That makes sense. I'll drive it again Friday and give that a look.

My main concern was that it is not something internal in the transmission or valve body causing the resistance in the shifter.

Hard to tell until you take the cable out of the equation.
